In an update to Waverly's Emmitt House fire, investigators from the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office have learned that two off-duty firefighters from Pennsylvania were in the building at the time of the incident. The men reportedly went to check what was happening when it became apparent something was wrong, and then they directed those inside to exit the building.
"We would be very interested in talking to these two gentlemen and finding out what it was exactly that they saw that led them to want to evacuate the facility immediately," said Michael Duchesne, a spokesperson for the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office.
He added that investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the fire
"We know from the other parts of the investigation that the fire was burning for about 30-45 minutes before it was actually called in," said Duchesne.
Since the Monday night blaze, the Emmitt House has faced demolition.
