For the second time in a month there has been an inmate suicide at a southern Ohio prison.
James Redmond, Jr. was found hanging in his cell at the Ross Correctional Institution near Chillicothe at about 5:45 Sunday evening. He died about an hour later.
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections spokesperson JoEllen Smith says Redmond was in a cell alone.
He had served about half of a 19 year sentence for rape in Lucas County.
It's the 10th inmate suicide this year in Ohio. Earlier this year Billy Slagle, who was on death row, killed himself just days before he was to be executed.
Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro hanged himself at the prison in Orient in September, a few days after he had been moved there.
A report from two independent consultants looking at the high number of inmate suicides in Ohio is expected to be given to Director Gary Mohr by the end of the week and released to the media some time next week.
