A Water-Can Walk will take place in Chillicothe at the end of April. Cherie Catron says nearly 2,000 people die each day from diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking water, so money raised will help provide water filters for a small village in Kenya.
"The average woman or child carrying carries about 45 pounds on their 3-to-5-mile trek throughout the developing world, so it's an extensive burden that they carry," said Catron.
Participants of the Water-Can Walk on April 26th will collect donations prior to the walk and will walk 1.5 miles with an empty water container that will be filled at the Yoctangee pond the day of the event. Participants, carrying water, will then walk back the 1.5 miles.
Containers will not be provided.
"Just like in Africa, people bring whatever they have," said Catron, "so we're asking people to bring maybe empty milk jugs; even small children can bring maybe a cup or a small jug."
The event will start at the RossCountyYMCA. More information is available at the YMCA.
