Coming out on top of an evenly played game can be measured by doing the little things. The Cavalier found that out in a 43-41 loss at Warren Saturday night.

Just 24 hours after sewing up the Frontier Athletic Conference championship, Chillicothe traveled to battle the Warriors a former Southeast Ohio Athletic League foe. The Cavaliers hadn’t made the trip to Washington County since departing for the SCOL after the 2012-13 season.

Blane Maddox’s team looked every bit the same as his others who often reach deep into the post season at the Convo. And they still do the little things right, second chance baskets, clean, sound discipline on defense and efficient offense… with an ability to manage the clock at the end of a period.

Brandon Noel dropped in a trey before the end of the 1st period to notch the game at 12, but Warren’s Troy Huck answered with his own at the buzzer for a 15-12 lead eight minutes in. Simon Roderick hit a running layup to pull the Cavs to with 23-22 with 2:02 left in the first half. The Warriors worked the offense for the rest of the half but failed to score entering the break

Branden Maughmer missed a pair of free throws and a chance to out the Cavs ahead with 1:27 remaining in the third. His brother Jayvon sank a shot to pull within 35-34 through three. Warren used a 6-2 run to open the fourth and gave the Warriors just enough of a cushion at 41-36. The Cavs didn’t score during the next 2:30 before the elder Maughmer sank a set of free throws at 3:40 to cut the deficit to 41-38. Noah Nichols scored on a layup after a missed three-pointer by Noel. The 6’5” sophomore would bounce back and drain a three with 2:13 left, but neither team would score again the rest of the contest, leaving Warren as the victor.

“When they went on that run in the fourth quarter” said Cav s Coach Eris Huffer after the game “they got three offensive rebounds that they turned right back into layups… As discipline a team as Warren is, you can’t do those types of things.”

Warren had one more field goal than the Cavs (18-of-37 vs 17-of-37) and two more three-pointers while Chillicothe had two more free throws.

“Yeah, it’s a tough loss… to see how way we played and how we competed” said Huffer. “I thought our effort was there. That was a disappointed locker room. We’ve gotta rest up, Tuesday we’ve got Vinton County.”

Simon Roderick led the Cavs offensively for a second consecutive night with 12 points. Will Roderick added 10 for Chillicothe’s double figure scorers. The Warriors’ Huck had 14 to lead all scorers and Josh Huffman added 10.

Chillicothe (13-6/11-0) heads to Vinton County Tuesday night.
