Justin Timberlake Reveals The Real Reason He Honored Prince At Super Bowl

At Super Bowl LII, Justin Timberlake performed at the halftime show and included a Prince tribute via a projection of the late legend singing a portion of "I Would Die 4 U."

Many people on social media had different views about this. Before Prince's death, he admitted how he hated holograms and any forms of digitized screens that showed dead artists performing onstage. So, many true fans of The Purple One believed that he wouldn't have approved of this part of the performance with JT. Fans also brought up the beef Timberlake and Prince previously had. However, others believed the projection was a sweet moment and the city of Minneapolis being lit up in purple was a great touch.

After the performance, JT appeared on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon." That's when the singer revealed the real reason he decided to include a Prince tribute in his halftime show. "It's a moment for me, and if I'm being quite honest, it's because he's always been the pinnacle of musicianship," Billboard reports JT said. "And when we decided that the serendipity and synergy [of being] in Minneapolis, he's such a special thing here aside from what he is all over the world. I just felt like I wanted to do something for this city and something for him that would just be the ultimate homage to what I consider the G.O.A.T. of musicians."

Timberlake added: "We got the actual vocal stems from 'I Would Die 4 U' and the actual recording, and then we got uncut footage from his performance of it in Purple Rain and somehow, someway, by the grace of, probably Prince looking down on us, it synced up and it was this crazy, serendipitous moment ... and I just wanted to use that opportunity to do something special for this city but most of all my favorite musician of all time."
