Unioto Beats Warren to Advance to DII District Final


The Unioto Shermans held on to pick up a 48-44 win over Warren in the D2 District Semis, Friday.


Unioto started strong, taking a lead of 15-10 after the opening quarter and built an 18-10 lead early in the second period, before Warren caught fire with 58% shooting while cooling off the Shermans at 30%. The Warriors outscored Unioto in the second quarter 18-11 and used a 7-0 run to take a 28-26 advantage into the locker-room at halftime.


The Shermans shot no better in the third quarter at 31%, but Warren wasn't much better at 33% as Unioto grabbed a 36-32 lead after three quarters.


Warren would get the lead back one last time, using a 6-0 runs for a 38-36 lead. The Tanks then made a 7-0 run of their own for a 43-38 lead and used trips to the foul line to earn the 48-44 win.


Logan Swackhammer led the Tanks with 20 points, followed Brandon Kennedy and Chance Smith with 8 apiece. Peyton Hill put up 7 points with Gabe Fisher added 5 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots.


Warren turned the ball over 16 times, with 10 of those coming in the second half. Unioto committed 10 turnovers for the game. The Shermans shot 16/44 from the field for only 36%- including 7/12 from the arc and 9/15 from the free-throw line. Warren shot 18/41 for 44%- including 3/9 from the arc and 5/8 from the foul line. The Warriors out-boarded Unioto 24-22.


(21-2) Unioto will now play (18-6) Waverly for the district final at 8:15pm on Friday, March 9th. The Tigers rallied from a 16-point deficit for a 71-60 win over Sheridan.
