First Responder Dies following 2-Vehicle Crash

A first responder died in a crash that occurred while en route to an emergency call in Jackson County. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, an emergency vehicle owned by Portsmouth Ambulance Services had its lights and sirens activated while traveling southbound on State Route 93 at around 6:44 p.m., Friday. 


Authorities said a northbound vehicle driven by Steven Dunnavant, 22, of Oak Hill, traveled left of center and collided with the ambulance. 


Authorities said a passenger in the emergency vehicle, Jennifer Cross, 43 of Jackson, was taken to Holzer Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased; the ambulance driver, Brian Webb, 28, of Chesapeake, and Dunnavant were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.


According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, no charges have been filed, but the investigation will be forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor.
