Adena Rallies To Win D3 Sectional Title Thriller/ Unioto Falls to WCH

ADENA 57, PORTSMOUTH 54

-

Top seed Adena kept their composure to with-stand a very physical Portsmouth Trojans defense for a 57-54 Division 3 Boys Basketball Sectional Championship, Friday at Waverly Downtown Gym.

-

The Warriors trailed most of the game and were down 41-28 late in the third quarter, before mounting their comeback. Trailing 53-50 with just under two minutes remaining, the Warriors went on a 7-1 finish. Preston Sykes connected on a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:15 to play to tie the game and Zach Fout put Adena ahead 55-53 with free throws at 59 seconds remaining. They would never trail again, although Portsmouth had a good look at a three-point attempt at the buzzer, but missed.

-

The difference in the game was Adena's full-court pressure defense in the second half that helped force six Portsmouth turnovers in the fourth quarter to go along with their nine three-point goals for the game.

-

Adena shot 18/45 for 40% from the field- including 9/20 from the arc. They added 12/22 from the foul line. Portsmouth shot a sizzling 18/29 for 62%- including 6/8 from the arc and were 12/17 from the free throw line. The Warriors also won the rebounding battle 22-19. Despite committing 14 turnovers to the Trojans 12, Portsmouth's 6 miscues in the fourth period was massive in lifting Adena to victory.

-

Portsmouth led at the end of each stop, except the final one. The Trojans were up 15-9 after one, 30-22 at half, 42-36 after three, but Adena held the 57-54 lead at the end of the game.
