Zane Trace Escapes Hillsboro Upset Bid

The (19-4) Zane Trace Pioneers needed some big plays down the stretch to rally for a 51-48 Division 2 Sectional Championship win over the determined (10-14) Hillsboro Indians, Saturday at Southeastern High School.

The Pioneers had an early lead of 17-12 and later Hillsboro held a 42-36 lead, only to see Zane Trace close on a 15-6 run for the victory.

The score was tied 10-10 after the first quarter and Zane Trace led 22-19 at half. The Indians surged to a 37-34 lead after three quarters and led until ZT took the lead back at 47-46 in the fourth. Though the score remained close, Hillsboro never led again, but did have the ball in the closing 2.7 seconds but Cam Evans of Zane Trace stole the ball on the right wing to seal the win.

The Pioneers were led by Evans with 25 points, followed by senior Chad Ison's 12 points. 6'6 junior Nick Nesser scored only 6 points, but had 3 blocked shots and drew a charge late in the game against Hillsboro's Ethan Watson that Coach Gary Kellough claimed was the turning point in the game.

The Indians had three players in double figures, led by Ryan Scott's 16 points, 12 points and 6 rebounds from 6'3 sophomore Brad Miller and 10 from Watson.

Hillsboro was 20/39 from the field for 51%- including 3/9 from the arc and added 5/6 from the foul line. Zane Trace was 19/38 for 50%- including 4/8 from the arc and added 9/13 from the free throw line.

Zane Trace won the rebounding game 23-15, but committed an untypical 11 turnovers, while Hillsboro had only 9.

The Pioneers advance to play Athens at 6:15pm February 28th at the Ohio University Convocation Center, with WKKJ airtime at 6pm.
