Adena "D" Cools Off Ironton

The (18-6) Adena Warriors used a lock-down zone defense to slow down the athletic (17-7) Ironton Tigers in a 43-36 Division 3 District Semi win Saturday at Ohio University.

Adena's defense slammed the door on Ironton in the first half, holding the Tigers to only 22% shooting at the break, where the Warriors took a 16-8 lead into the locker-room at halftime.

Adena's biggest lead was 29-15 late in the third period, before Ironton started to make a move to get to within 29-20 after three quarters.

The Tigers' defense strangled the Warriors in the fourth quarter, holding Adena scoreless until 3:49 left in the game when Preston Sykes hit a three-pointer to expand their 29-24 lead to 32-24. Ironton shot 64% from the floor in the final period to get back into the game, which added to the tension for Adena fans. Ironton cut the lead to 37-36.

The Warriors used more defensive stops and big rebounds, then put the game away at the foul line with two big free throws from Sykes to make it 39-36. Zach Fout made two more free throws for a 41-36 lead and Caleb Fogelson made one of two for a 42-36 advantage. Sykes made one of two with less than 10 seconds to play to put the game out of reach at 43-36.

Fouts played one of his best games of the season, according to Coach Kyle Bradley, as Fout's double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds led the Warriors' offensive effort. Preston Sykes added 12 points and 6 rebounds, Logan Bennett had 5 points, 7 boards and 2 blocked shots, then Caleb Fogelsong and Jacob Shipley each added three points.

Ironton was led by Reid Carrico's 16 points and 10 rebounds and Charlie Large added 12. Ethan Wilson and Jordan Grizzle each scored 4.

For the game, Adena shot 13/36 for 36%- including 5/16 from the arc and added 12/20 from the charity stripe. Ironton shot 16/42 for 38%- including only 2/10 from the arc and 2/6 from the line.

Adena did a tremendous job against Ironton's full court press, which was applied for the entire game. The Warriors committed only 8 turnovers. Ironton had 9. The rebounding was even at 28-28.

Adena will play Chesapeake for the D-3 District Title on March 9th after the Panthers beat West Union 53-50.
