SVC Volleyball Has Wild Night Between Top 4 Teams

If you follow the Scioto Valley Conference in volleyball for very long, you will come to see some of the top teams in southern Ohio, that know how to put on a show for the fans.

Tuesday was no different, as the top four teams in the standings faced-off against each other.

The match that headlined two of the three SVC unbeaten teams, was Huntington at Westfall. This went four sets, with Huntington taking the first 25-20, only to see the Mustangs respond with a 25-13 decision. The turning point probably came in the wild third set, where the Mustangs shook-off at least three set-points for a 31-29 win for a (2-1) lead. Westfall ended the match with a 25-19 victory in set four, to run their SVC record to (5-0) and handed Huntington their first defeat in the conference.

Westfall was led by Marissa Mullins with 20 kills and Kristin Phillips added 17. Kayla Fleischmann led their defense with 15 digs and Claire Latham had 14. No stats were available from Huntington at press time.

At Zane Trace, unbeaten Adena was taken to the wire, needing five tough sets to beat Zane Trace (23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 15-13). The Pioneers held leads of 2-0, 8-7 and were tied at 10-10 in the fifth. Then, with the score later at 12-11 Adena, the Warriors ran that to match-point at 14-11, but the Pioneers fended-off two match points to cut it to 14-13, before the Warriors won it 15-13. Adena improves to (5-0) in the conference, with the Pioneers falling for a second time, standing at (3-2).

Ellie Harper was one of four Warriors with double-digit kills, leading the way with 21. Makenna Lovely had 14 while Jenna Martin and Hannah Burns added 13 each. Camryn Carroll had 26 digs while Lovely had 21.

Zane Trace was led by Alli Bennett with 10 kills, Lexi Scott and Hannah Hale each added 8. Lexi Betts has 22 digs.

Adena will host Westfall for sole possession of first place on Thursday.

Elsewhere, Southeastern Coach Lori Koker won her 370th career match with a (25-17, 25-16, 25-8) win over Piketon.

Despite 18 kills and 21 digs from Paint Valley's Olivia Smith, the Bearcats fell to Unioto 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17).
