Adena VB Downs Westfall For Sole Possession of SVC Lead

In what has become a typical tight volleyball match up between Westfall and Adena, fans saw more of the same Thursday, with Adena hanging on for a (3-1) 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21 win to take over the SVC standings lead.

The Warriors stand (6-0/9-0) while Westfall falls to (5-1/6-2) and are tied with Huntington, who beat Paint Valley in straight sets.

The Mustangs had early leads in each set, only to see Adena come back each time.

In Set #1, Westfall had leads of 8-4, 14-11 and led as late as 19-18, before the Warriors finished on a 7-5 run for the opening 25-23 win. Adena middle blocker Jenna Martin was a big defensive influence early, blocking or assisting in three blocks vs Kristin Phillips.

Set #2 again saw Westfall with a lead of 7-4, before the Warriors went on a 12-2 run for a 16-9 lead. Westfall clawed back late to within 24-21, before Adena finished out 25-21 for the (2-0) match lead.

Westfall stayed alive with a 25-22 third set victory after early leads of 13-9 and 17-12. Adena drew even at 19-19, 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22, but could not get the upper hand in the third set defeat.

In the fourth and final set, the Mustangs again got leads of 9-5, 10-6 and 13-11. Adena came storming back on a 6-0 run for a 17-13 lead and built advantages of their own at 19-14 and 23-17, before match point at 24-19. But, Westfall came right back to get to within 24-21, before the Warriors put the match away on a Makenna Lovely kill off the Westfall blocker.

Adena's Jenna Martin led the offense with 15 kills, 1 solo block and 4 assisted blocks, Makenna Lovely and Hannah Burns each had 11 kills, Sydney Fogelsong had 8 kills, 7 for Ellie Harper and 6 for Makaela Lovely, who also had 18 assists. Ari DaRif added 16 assists. Camryn Carroll had 27 digs, Hope Garrison 19, Brenna McQuiniff 17, DaRif 15 and Makaela Lovely with 11. The Warriors served 6 aces.

The Mustangs were led by Kristin Phillips with 21 kills, Marissa Mullins 20, Hailey Young 5 and Lauren Daniels with 4. Kayla Fleischmann led the Westfall defensive effort with 23 digs, Phillips added 15, as did Claire Latham, who also had 33 assists. Daniels had 14 digs and Mullins with 11. Westfall aced Adena 6 times on serves.

The first round of SVC play comes to a close on Tuesday, with (6-0) Adena traveling to (5-1) Huntington and (5-1) Westfall facing (4-2) Zane Trace.

Elsewhere in the SVC on Thursday, Unioto swept Southeastern, ZT (3-0) over Piketon and Huntington (3-0) over Paint Valley.
