Coming "Ruck 22" Event Devoted to Ending Veterans Committing Suicide

Our Kevin Coleman spoke to two vets who are part of a local event devoted to ending and bringing awareness to veterans committing suicide.

"Ruck 22," as in ruck sack, is part of a national movement. The focus activity is carrying 22 pounds on your back for 22 kilometers (about 14 miles) on the Adena / Larry Cox Recreational Trail that runs along the park.

Ed Kirker, the president of the local group "First Capital Ruck 22," says that's a 14-mile fund- and awareness-raising effort you can do, during a free event October 15th in and around Chillicothe's Yoctangee Park.

There will be shorter efforts, including 22 steps of reflection, in the day-long event that should end at Veteran's Park along Yoctangee Boulevard.

Kirker says several veteran support groups will be at the event, including the local Army Reserve unit - who lost twice their numbers to suicide at home than to combat in Iraq & Afghanistan.

Nick Booher, vice president of First Capital Ruck 22, also spoke with Kevin while Chillicothe Council was in executive session last Monday. Their secretary was intended to introduce the event to council...but was right then working with a fellow veteran to stop him from committing suicide.

Ed Kirker said the cause is also close to him because his brother and sister both committed suicide.

They said all money the group raises will go towards veterans help groups.

The "First Capital Ruck 22" will include a free evening concert, with rising country star Ryan Daniel making a special appearance. His single "Camo" from the album "Y'all Ain't Ready For This" Dropped March 2021.
