Chillicothe Council Accepts Grant for Police Hiring

Chillicothe Council accepted a grant for law enforcement hiring Monday night. Kevin Coleman reports.

Julie Preston saw her ordinance pass on first reading to allow the city to use $1,600,000 of yet another American Rescue Plan fund, part of the federal response to COVID.

She said this will allow the police department to hire eight new staff members, with sign-on bonuses. Preston said the police department is short staffed and already interviewing.

She also has an update of nuisance code on the way. Preston said the police chief and mayor had requested an update of the city code that has three parts: tall grass, junk vehicles, and rubbish.

She said this especially focuses on weeds and tall grass, and the time limits on when letters can be sent out, to be more in conformity with the state.
