Two Men Indicted for Separate Burglaries in Ross County

A Chillicothe man was indicted on charges of burglary and assault during last Friday’s session of the Ross County Grand Jury.

The Ross County Prosecutor’s Office reports that Donald W. Cary II, 28, has been charged with a single fourth-degree felony count of burglary and a single first-degree misdemeanor count of assault.

The initial incident took place on January 5th of 2023 when a Chillicothe police officer responded to a home in the 600-block of Liberty Street in reference to a disturbance.

The officer arrived on scene and spoke with the homeowner who indicated they were sitting at home watching television when Cary entered the house without permission and began singing a song.

Cary reportedly refused to leave the residence and is alleged to have assaulted the home’s resident.

If convicted, Cary faces up to 18 months incarceration and a fine of $5,000.

Another felony burglary case presented during Friday's grand jury session also resulted in an indictment.

According to investigators with the Ross County Prosecutor’s Office, Ray A. Hawkworth, 42, was indicted on a second-degree count of burglary for an offense which took place on February 20th of 2023.

A Ross County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a residence in the 3900-block of Mingo Road on February 20th in reference to the burglary. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with the home’s owner who indicated that she awakened to the sounds of her dogs barking, and then heard something strike the home’s outside garage door.

After breaking the door open, Hawkworth is alleged to have entered the garage before moving on to the home’s front door. He’s then alleged to have started banging on the door while yelling “let me in old man, I want your daughter.”

The responding deputy soon arrived on scene and placed Hawkworth into custody.

If convicted, Hawkworth could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison and a fine of $15-thousand.

In total, the Ross County Grand Jury was presented with 17 cases during its Friday session with 16 returned as true bills, but only these two were open to the public.
