Chillicothe Delivers First Win for Coach Doug Pryor

First year head coach Doug Pryor picked up his first win at the helm of Chillicothe, as the Cavs beat Mifflin 27-14.

.

The Cavaliers scored in every quarter and led 27-0 with 3 minutes remaining in the game. The Punchers scored two late touchdowns against the Cavs reserves, including an on sides kick and a time out with 20 seconds left to set up a final 50 yard pass for a score.

.

This Cavalier team was expected by some to throw 70 percent of their plays. But with starting quarterback Jaiden Cain out for the season, and the emergence of sophomore Hunter Thomas at running back, this Chillicothe offense has turned to power running.

.

Thomas ran the ball 29 times for 165 tough yards as the Cavaliers out rushed Mifflin 209 to 22 on the night.

.

Chillicothe struck first with an opening 80 yard drive with quarterback Christian Benson rolling around right end for a 7 yard score. The Cavs added a 37 yard field goal from the toe of Jacob Coffland on their next series and led 10-0 early in the second period.

.

The Cavs fumbled to start the second half but stopped Mifflin on downs. The Cavs Joel Barnes then unleashed a 60 yard punt to switch field position. Mifflin had to punt from their 1 yard line and Chillicothe took advantage.

.

A short 20 yard drive was finished with a 9 yard Tyce Netter TD run and a 2 point conversion pass from Benson to Courtland Duncan. The Cavaliers led 18-0 and added another scoring run by Benson in the final quarter to lead 25-0.

.

The final score came when the Mifflin punter was tackled in the end zone for a safety giving the Cavs a 27-0 lead late in the game.

.

Mifflin did throw for 238 yards on 19-37 passing. Chillicothe picked off three Puncher passes. One of the few negatives for Coach Pryor’s team was losing four fumbles, including the late fumble that Mifflin returned for their first touchdown of the year.

.

Chillicothe (1-1) goes back on the road next week to meet Watkins Memorial, which can be heard on News Radio WBEX 92.7FM/1490AM and iHeart Radio.
