(WSAZ News) -- Portsmouth City Council has condemned racism in high school sports, through a resolution they have approved.
Council says their hope is the resolution is a start for addressing racist comments and incidents that have been happening in high school sports for years.
The legislation is calling for games to potentially be forfeited for race-related incidents.
Portsmouth City Councilman Sean Dunne pointed to current OHSAA bylaws written for unsportsmanlike conduct, but said there is "nothing specific to racist behavior or racist actions."
Supporters of the resolution hope it also gets the support of other school systems and government bodies across Ohio. Portsmouth Council says they also plan to take their message to the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
