The Good Samaritan Network of Ross County will soon be moving into a new home in the former Hostess building at 255 North Woodbridge Aveenue. This location will give the food pantry the ability to keep pace with growing demand and will provide additional operating space to better serve clients.

The pantry now rents the rear of the Velvet Ice Cream building at 133 East Seventh Street. Since moving into this location over a decade ago, the demand for assistance has more than doubled. In 2003, the pantry served 15,807 individuals. Last year 41,567 individuals were served, an increase of 25,760 people or a 163% increase over the ten years. Although the Velvet Ice Cream Company has been very generous over the years by offering this location at a very affordable rent, the current pantry location has made it very difficult to keep up with exploding demand and to operate efficiently to serve clients. In addition, major renovation and repairs to this building would have needed to be made had the pantry remained at this location.

This former Hostess building became available after it was offered for sale through bankruptcy. Good Samaritan Network made an offer for this building through the bankruptcy court, but the bid was rejected in favor of a nation-wide consolidated bid by Hackman Capital Management Group of California for all remaining Hostess properties. Hackman later contacted Good Samaritan Network and offered to sell the Chillicothe Hostess building to them for about 50% of the appraised value of this property.

The Good Samaritan Network was the fortunate recipient of several large contributions over the past several years, which have been allocated for building and capital improvement projects. As a result, Good Samaritan was able to acquire this new home for the food pantry and make needed building renovations. The new building, with about 5,000 sq. ft. of warehouse and 1,000 sq. ft. of retail space, should accommodate the pantry and serve hungry families in our community for many years to come.

The food pantry will continue to operate at the 133 E. Seventh St. location until the new building is prepared for the move. A public notice will be made in a few weeks to announce the Grand Opening of the North Woodbridge location.

The Good Samaritan Network of Ross County is committed to continuing to try to keep up with the demand for food for the less fortunate of our community as it has done over the past 30 years. As this demand increases, we know that the people of Chillicothe and Ross County will continue to generously support us and our mission.
