A death row inmate hanged himself in his cell at Chillicothe Correctional Institution Sunday night. Patrick Leonard was pronounced dead at Adena Regional Medical Center.
WSYX in Columbus reports Leonard was sentenced to death for the 2000 killing of his ex-girlfriend in Hamilton County.
Court records show the 47-year-old Leonard was angry at her for ending their relationship, handcuffed her, tried to rape her, and shot her three times.
Leonard was unusual among death row inmates in that he did not have a previous criminal record. He did not have a scheduled execution date.
