Ohio Motorists Wild for Roundabouts

A new study in a southwest Ohio county says roundabouts are doing a better job of preventing crashes than the national average.

According to engineers, motorists like the roundabouts because traffic keeps moving and they don't have to wait on a light.

Butler County Engineer, Greg Wilkens, says his office has built 13 roundabouts at problem intersections, and the results are staggering. There has been a 60 percent reduction in overall crashes, compared to a national average of 40 percent. There have been 80 percent fewer injury crashes, compared to a nationwide average of 75 percent, and there has been a 100 percent reduction in fatalities at roundabouts, compared to 90 percent across the country.

Wilkens says the roundabouts force drivers to slow down, minimizing the prospects of a serious wreck.
