The tenth annual Pickaway County High School Battle Over Books competition was held March 29 at the Pickaway County Library. Eleven teams from six high schools participated. In all, 60 students competed in the event. Teams earned points in a quiz-show format by correctly answering questions identifying of one of the 12 books on the reading list.

This year’s books included two non-fiction titles: “The Unwanted” by Don Brown about Syrian refugees and “The Strange True Tale of Frankenstein’s Creator Mary Shelley” by Catherine Reef. Among the non-fiction titles were “The Belles” by Dhonielle Clayton, “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott, “Wild Bird” by Wendelin Van Draanen and “Love and Gelato” by Jenna Evans Welch.

Westfall High School claimed the championship trophy.

Logan-Hocking High School finished second and was coached by language arts teacher Ben Taulbee. Other participating schools were Circleville, Logan Elm, Teays Valley and Unioto.

Serving as scorekeepers, readers and timers were Heather Foll with the Pickaway County Board of DD; Lynn Houston and Carol Bowling from the Friends of the Library; Karla Barnes from the Library Board of Trustees; community members Robyn Gill, Alice Harker and Gary Wasmer; and David Fausnaugh from the Pickaway County Library.
