Fewer Memorial Day Fatal Crashes Reported in Ohio

The state patrol says it saw fewer road fatalities this Memorial Day weekend.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reporting 12 deaths on Ohio’s roadways during the 2019 Memorial Day weekend according to provisional statistics. In 2018, there were 18 traffic deaths during the Memorial Day weekend. Three of this year’s fatalities were the result of not wearing a safety belt when available, two were pedestrians, one was OVI-related and one was not wearing a helmet.

One of those fatal crashes took place around noon Saturday along Rickenbacker Parkway. That involved a stolen vehicle. According to authorities, driver had traveled too fast while navigating a curve and flipped the vehicle over the median. Full details have yet to be released.

Another crash took place in Jackson County late Monday night. That crash claimed the life of a 41-year-old Marianna woman. That was a wrong-way crash along State Route 231.

Other fatal crashes were reported up north in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties. In Central Ohio, one fatal crash took place in Union County with two occurring in Franklin County. Other crashes occurred in southern Ohio in Lawrence and Brown counties.

The patrol’s four-day reporting period began Friday, May 24 and ran through Monday, May 27.
