West Jefferson Murder Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

A man suspected in a quadruple murder in West Jefferson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, Monday.

Madison County Prosecutor Nicholas Adkins says suspect John Paul Steckel was indicted on several charges, including aggravated murder, for the May deaths of 45-year-old Andrew Swindall, 45-year-old Shawn Wright, 30-year-old Jamie Lavender, and 38-year-old Leon Daniels.

All four were found shot to death on May 24th at Swindall's apartment building on Jackson Avenue.

Steckel is being held on a two-and-a-half-million dollar bond.

West Jefferson Police Chief Chris Floyd has said the victims and Steckel knew each other, and allege that robbery was a possible motive for the shootings. Steckel was on probation at the local, state and federal levels at the time of the shooting, and possess a lengthy criminal background.
