Chillicothe Council Member Proposes Local Public Arts Committee

A Chillicothe City Council member wants to explore the idea of establishing a local public arts committee.

In a letter to Chillicothe Council President, Bruce Arnold, Fifth Ward Council member, Courtney Lewis, writes that many city governments have established public arts committees and says that with the continuing revitalization of the city’s downtown, in addition to its world heritage designation drawing nearer, the city needs to continue to create an identity that celebrates Chillicothe’s unique historical, cultural and natural resources.

Lewis writes that she envisions the purpose of the public arts committee would be to strengthen the community’s positive reputation, coordinate an artistic vision and enrich the lives of citizens, businesses and visitors. She says the committee would potentially review and recommend public art projects and make recommendations to City Council regarding the funding, selections, acquisition, maintenance and placement of such public art.

The request will be under consideration in Chillicothe Council committee.
