Piketon wins "Gold Ball", SVC Title

Piketon's defense came up with a game-turning play in the first quarter, and the Redstreaks high-powered offense was just that, in a 44-to-14 win at Huntington, on rainy, chilly, Friday night. The game was our "Herrnstein Hyundai" Scioto Valley Conference Game of the Week on 94-Country-WKKJ. With the win, Piketon wins it's first outright SVC title since 1997, and finishes the regular season at 9-0, and 6-0 in SVC. After seeing the Redstreaks score the first two times they had ball to lead 16-to-nothing, Huntington mounted it's initial scoring drive, capped off by a Nick Marion to Seth McCloskey touchdown pass of 33 yards to make the score 16-to-6. Piketon then turned the ball over on it's ensuing possession, and Huntington had life. However, moments later Piketon's Zane Brownfield intercepted Huntsmen quarterback Nick Marion's pass at the goal-line, and the tide turned. Piketon quarterback Levi Gullion, who would throw for four touchdowns on the night, marched the Redstreaks back down the field for another score, and the rout was on. Gullion, who on the regular season threw 28 touchdown passes and just 4 interceptions, connected with Cameron Loar for two scores last night, and Johnny Burton for his other two scoring tosses. Huntington, which finishes the season at 2-7 overall, and 1-5 in the SVC, also got a 45 touchdown run from back-up QB Bryalon Leach. Piketon is headed to the playoffs, they started the night as the #1 seed in Region 19 of Division V. The Redstreaks will host a first-round game next weekend. Despite their 2-and-7 record, Huntington still has faint playoff hopes. With the expansion of the playoff field to 16 teams per region this year, the Huntsmen entered last night 15th in Division VI, Region 24. Pending the outcome of other games in the region, Huntington will wait for the official release of the OHSAA Computer rankings Sunday to see if they stayed in the top-16.
