Accident snarls Wednesday traffic

Traffic was stopped on US 23 North near the State Route 35 exit in Chillicothe for close to two hours on Wednesday afternoon, that after a three vehicle accident that included an apparent suicide attempt. Shortly before 2:30 Wednesday, a 1999 Chevy Silverado driver by 39-year-old Christopher Long of Chillicothe collided with a Dodge Caravan driver by 77-year-old Horace McGlone of Portsmouth. The impact forced the Caravan to strike an oncoming semi-truck, driven by 67-year-old Todd Wanous of Minnesota. After the accident, Long jumped off a bridge near the accident scene, landing on the bank of the Scioto River some 40-feet-below, in what troopers from the Oho State Highway Patrol are calling a suicide attempt. Rescue crews were to able to get Long away from the water, and he was transported to the OSU Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition. A passenger in the minivan, 77-year-old Shirley McGlone of Portsmouth, was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
