WCH Boys Win D2 Sectional Championship

Washington CH is Convo-bound after defeating the Unioto Shermans for the Boys' Division II Sectional Championship, 45-37, Friday night, at Southeastern High School.

Garitt Leisure set the tone for the Blue Lions, knocking down four 3-point shots in the first quarter, scoring 12 of Washington's 14 points. Unioto kept it close knocking down two 3s of their own on their way to 10 point quarter.

Unioto went to their bench in the second quarter and junior forward Josh Lambert scored four quick points to give the Shermans the lead for a short time as Blue Lions point guard Evan Upthegrove came to life and scored 5 points of his own. Each team finished the quarter with 8 points, and Washington led at the half 22-18.

For the first half, the Blue Lions were 7-16 shooting for 44%, but 5 of those 7 were from behind the arc, going 5-10 from 3-point range for 50%. Washington was 1-2 from the charity stripe and committed 6 turnovers. Unioto shot 8-20 from the field in the half for 40% and hit two 3-point shots; they 0-1 from the free throw line and also committed 6 turnovers.

Unioto was held to just 4 third-quarter points as the Blue Lions forced them into 5 turnovers that the Blue Lions were able to convert into 9 points. Things started to get a little chippy in the second half, as Unioto had two technical fouls called against them, Washington had one, and a fan from each side was ejected from the game.

Isaac Little for the Shermans did all he could in the fourth quarter to keep Unioto in the game as he led all scorers in the quarter with 8 points, but Washington had a balanced attack in the final frame with six different players scoring points, led in the quarter by senior Blaise Tayese who had 5. The Shermans did out-score Washington in the fourth quarter 15-14 but were unable to overcome their four-point third quarter as the Blue Lions finished the game with a 45-37 victory.

Unioto was led in scoring by Isaac Little's 16 points, he was the only Sherman in double figures. As a team they were 15-42 shooting for 36% and went 4-13 from behind the arc for 31%. Unioto committed 17 turnovers and were 3-5 from the free throw line. The Shermans season comes to a close with a 9-13 overall record.

Washington was led in scoring by Garitt Leisure's 15 points, 12 of those in the first quarter. All-FAC first teamer Evan Upthegrove added 11 and Richie Burns finished with 8 points. The Blue Lions shot 13-29 for 45% and were 5-14 from three, all of which came in the first half. They committed 1 turnovers and were 12-24 from the free throw line for 50%.

Washington (15-8) moves on to the Convocation Center at Ohio University on Thursday for the Division II District Semis at 7 p.m. The Washington CH Lady Blue Lions Division II District Championship game against Vinton County has been moved to Wednesday, March 27th, at Southeastern High School at 7 p.m. Buckeye Country 105.5FM/iHeartRadio will cover both games.
