Ross SWCD Says There's Still Time to Purchase Stocking Fish for Annual Sale

-

The Ross Soil and Water Conservation District announces there is still time to order during the annual fish stocking sale. Property owners can stock their pond for a summer of fishing and healthy pond management. The district is taking fish orders through the end of April at the Ross County Service Center or online at the district website www.rosscountyswcd.org.

The soil and water district website also has helpful information and useful links for urban and rural pond management. The site includes a fish stocking chart to help you determine how many fish are appropriate for your pond’s size. The site also links to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ comprehensive “Ohio Pond Management Handbook,” a start to finish guide for building and maintaining a healthy pond for swimming, fishing and aquatic wildlife.

The Ross Soil and Water Conservation District reminds customers about the pick-up time and location for this year’s fish sale. Residents who placed orders should pick up orders at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday May 7, 2019 at the Ross County Fairgrounds. Buyers should enter behind the racetrack from Fairgrounds Road and bring a regular 30-gallon trash can with a liner filled about one third full of their own pond water. The crew from the fish hatchery will put oxygen in the water so fish can be transported and deposited into the customer’s pond as soon as possible.

The Ross Soil and Water Conservation District provided free technical assistance or advice to 48 RossCounty pond owners last year. Ponds provide habitat for all kinds of aquatic wildlife and ponds are important for preventing soil erosion and protecting water quality. Ponds can retain rushing water during heavy rains and a pond can act as a kind of filter to keep nutrients and fertilizers from entering streams and rivers. District engineering technicians offer homeowners free technical advice on all aspects of pond management including site evaluation for building a new pond.

The soil and water district partners with Fender’s Fish Hatchery in Baltic, Ohio each spring to offer fish for stocking ponds at near wholesale cost. Residents can place an order or contact the district for information at 740-772-4110 by April 30, 2019.
