Suspended Pike County Sheriff Accused of Violating Bail Conditions

The suspended Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader is being accused of violating the conditions of his bail by contacting a witness in the case.

According to a recent court filing by the special prosecutor, Reader is alleged to have contacted a witness in the case on July 15th via text messaging.

Reader was indicted by the Pike County Grand Jury in July on felony and misdemeanor charges of evidence tampering, theft and conflicts of interest.

The allegations of wrong-doing against the now-suspended sheriff were made anonymously to the state auditor’s office in November of last year. The complaint alleged that Reader was taking money obtained during drug cases, and using it to fund a gambling habit.

Reader remains free on bail, and was placed on official suspension by the Ohio Supreme Court in early September. He is scheduled to appear in court at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning for a pretrial hearing.
