Huntington & Adena Swept from Regional VB Semis

The last of the SVC Volleyball teams bowed out of post-season play, as both Huntington and Adena were swept in Division 3 Regional Semifinal action Thursday at Logan High School.

BERLIN HILAND OVER HUNTINGTON (25-13, 25-10, 25-17)

The Hawks of Hiland ran their record to (26-1) with an impressive sweep over (18-8) Huntington. Hiland ran off to big leads on each of the first two sets with the Huntsmen more competitive in the final set.

Huntington held brief leads to start each set, only to see the Hawks run off scoring runs each time. In Set #1, Hiland built leads of 13-2 and never allowed Huntington to get any closer than 13-4 and 22-13, before closing for 25-13 opening win.

Set #2 saw more of the same, with Hiland grabbing leads of 10-3, 16-5 and 21-9 before wrapping up a 25-10 decision.

Huntington stayed closer in Set #3, getting as close as 19-15 after trailing earlier by a scores of 17-10 and 19-12, before falling 25-17.

Huntington was led by Megan Steele's 10 kills and 11 digs. Allison Basye added 7 kills and 8 digs. Lauryl Shope had 7 digs.

Belin Hiland was led by Madison Yoder's 12 kills. Serving was also big for the Hawks, picking up 9 aces.

This was Huntington's first regional volleyball appearance since 2016.

WHEELERSBURG STAYS UNBEATEN WITH 25-23, 28-26, 25-23 WIN OVER ADENA

The Pirates ran their record to (26-0) and continue to their streak of 73 consecutive sets without a loss, but the (18-8) Warriors came close in each set, only to fall short of the mark.

Adena fell behind 16-9 in Set #1, but rallied to tie the score at 20-20, 21-21 and 23-23, before Wheelersburg score the final two points for a 25-23 win.

Set #2 saw the Warriors fall behind 15-9, before they rallied for a lead at 18-16. The score see-sawed back and forth with Adena having set-point at 24-23, before falling 28-26.

.

Wheelersburg jumped to a 5-1 lead in Set #3, then the lights went out in the gym, delaying play for at least 20 minutes. When play resumed, Burg kept on track for a lead of 16-9 and later 22-16. Adena would then go on a 7-0 run to take a 23-22 lead, only to see the Pirates close on a 3-0 run for the match victory at 25-23.

Jenna Martin led Adena with 13 kills, 4 blocks and 6 digs, Makenna Lovely had 10 kills and 12 digs, Ellie Harper 9 kills, Hannah Burns 3 kills and 8 digs and Sydney Fogelsong with 2 kills and 2 blocks. Camryn Carroll led the defense with 39 digs, Hope Garrison added 8 and Olivia Riley 6. Ari DaRif led the serving with 3 aces.

Wheelersburg's front-line strength showed up with 15 kills each from Alli McQuay and Kylee Barney, and Ryleigh Meeker added 11 and Mallory Bergan with 7. Barney had 6 blocks and McQuay with 2. Bergan had 18 digs, Lauren Jolly 16, McQuay 12, Kaylee Darnell with 13 and Meeker with 10.

Adena closes their season at (18-8) and winners of 12 of their last 14 matches after going (9-15) last year. (26-0) Wheelersburg advances to play (26-1) Berlin Hiland at 2pm Saturday in the regional final.
