Cellphone Use Causing Injuries, Due to User Inattention

Did you find a new cell phone under the tree this year? Believe it or not, a recent study says it can be a hazard to your health. Cleveland Clinic’s Doctor Baruch Fertel did not take part in the study, but says results show cell-phone related injuries have increased significantly in the past twenty years.

.

The study looks at data on more than twenty-five hundred people with injuries to the head and neck, as a result of cell phone use. Many involve cuts, bruises, concussions, and even internal organ injuries. More than seven hundred of the injuries occurred in young people between the ages of thirteen and twenty-nine.

.

Doctor Fertel says we often hear about the dangers of distracted driving, but there are people who step out to cross the street with their heads buried in their phones - which is just as dangerous. He says it’s important for parents, to not only model good cell-phone behavior in front of their children, but to also educate them about the dangers of distraction.

.

Doctor Fertel says as we become more reliant on texting, we have to remember that looking at our screens requires more focus than just talking on the phone. he says folks should never look at their screens while performing tasks that require coordination such as driving, cycling, or even walking.
