Adena Holds Off Late Northwest Rally for Girls D-3 Sectional Crown

Adena is the lone Division 3 SVC Girls basketball team remaining in the post season, advancing to the district semis with a 47-43 win over Northwest in the sectional championship, Wednesday.

The Lady Warriors fell behind 7-2 to start and didn't get their first lead until late in the first quarter at 10-9. Adena led 12-11 after one period then expanded their lead to 26-13 at halftime.

Sophomore Caelan Miner provided the spark, scoring 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first half with four three-point goals.

Adena built their biggest lead at 31-15 midway through the third quarter before the Lady Mohawks closed on an 11-4 run to close to within 35-26 at the end of the third.

Leading 40-28, the Lady Warriors saw Northwest go on a 8-3 run to get to within 46-43 with 34 seconds left in the game, but Jadyn Smith sealed the game with one of her 9 free throws to finish the scoring at 47-43.

Caelan Miner's 14 points was joined by freshman Emma Garrison's 11 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Jadyn Smith's 9 points, Sydney Foglesong's 8 points and 4 rebounds and 5 points from Kiera Williams.

Northwest was led by both Ava Jenkins and Haidyn Wamsley with 13 points each, 6 from both Valerie Copas and Reagan Lewis and 5 from Kloe Montgomery.

While the Lady Warriors shot great from the field, the game was won at the foul line as Adena shot 17/26 compared to 5/10 for Northwest. Northwest was 18/39 from the field for 46%- including 4/13 from the arc, while Adena was 17/25 from the field for 68%- including 4/8 from the arc.

Both teams committed 9 turnovers and Adena won the rebounding battle 21-13.

The Lady Warriors improve to (17-3) and will play at North Adams February 24th in the district semis. The Lady Green Devils beat Lynchburg Clay 66-47.

Adena is the final SVC Division 3 team standing in the post season as Westfall fell at Alexander 56-32. No other details are known on that game.
