The Fairland Lady Dragons showed up at Waverly with a 20-2 record. Featuring three girls at six foot or taller, it appeared to be a tall task for the Lady Red Streaks to match up.
In the end, Piketon matched the Dragons' height and out rebounded Fairland 27-24. The difference turned out to be Fairland's relentless full court pressure that created 25 Piketon turnovers.
The Piketon Girls hung with the Dragons for three quarters staying within striking distance and trailing by only five late in the third period. Fairland scored the final bucket of the third stanza and then opened the final quarter on a 10-2 run to take control of the district semi final.
Piketon shot 33% from the floor compared to 40% for the winners. Three point shots were 3 to 2 in favor of Fairland. The big stat proved to be the turnovers, with Fairland converting enough transition baskets to stay ahead throughout three periods.
Piketon was led by sophomore Grace Lightle's 8 points and all SVC senior Kara Blanton's 9 points and double figure rebounds. Point guard Emily Chapman was the only Dragon to hit double figures with 15 markers on the night.
Brett Coreno's club finishes the year with a very respectable 17-7 record.
