Hillsboro City Council is considering the creation of a Downtown Redevelopment District.
The state in 2016 passed legislation to allow the creation of such districts to help municipalities renovate, rehab, or preserve historic buildings. Funds come from property taxes that are redirected to the district. The money can also be loaned to non-historic buildings in need of improvement.
It is believed at Downtown Redevelopment district would give building owners incentive to rehab their buildings in hopes of attracting new business, tourism, and jobs.
