Chillicothe Ross Library Now Fine Free

In keeping pace with other public library systems throughout the state, the Chillicothe Ross County Public Library is now fine free.

Library Director, James Hill, says the new policy, introduced in early April, is about make the library accessible to patrons.

"It's all about access. We don't want to penalize somebody just because they have a couple of dollars in late fees," said Hill.

Hill says fines simply keep people from using the library's services, adding that small fees on late items didn't really do much to make sure materials were returned on time.

"It's not really a deterrent. Ten cents a day is not really enough of a deterrent to make you think "Oh, I have to get home and return that book to the library because I don't want to pay twenty cents tomorrow." So unless you're going to institute a huge fee, it's not really worth the hassle," said Hill.

The new fine free policy applies to all library materials.
