A local Camp Sherman trainee returned wounded, to bring the first capital eagle back to life.
Madeline Tagg spoke about her father's adventures in the "Great War" at the Lucy Hayes Heritage Center recently. She explained how he and co-workers signed up for the fight without telling their parents.
John A. Kenz had left his work at the B&O Railyard but was eventually wounded by a gas attack and returned to Chillicothe.
Tagg showed photos and items from his effort at the Ross County Library under famous librarian Burton Stevenson. She said Kenz found the eagle weathervane from the first state capital stowed away, and asked to take it and repair it. He used his metalworking experience at the railyard.
Because of Kenz's efforts, the famous weathervane from the old stone courthouse is well known in Ross County.
Tagg makes made an appearance today in the Camp Sherman Library during the driving tour. Find more on CampShermanDays.com.
