Circleville Council Hears About School Changes

In Circleville Council Tuesday evening, two parts of a former school facility were showing much different treatment.

Circleville Mayor Don McIlroy said the historic Everts High School building is progressing in its new purpose.  The senior housing facility is on schedule to open in December.

But council continues to hesitate on what to do with the ailing part of the school the city still owns, better known as the Mill Street Gym.

In a committee meeting, councilman Bob Bensonhaver railed against the lack of arts and recreation in Circleville - with the loss of a theater and bowling alley - saying that the city is obligated to develop it into the arts and recreation center that has been proposed.

Two other council members said they would 'sell it tomorrow' if they could, because of its likelihood of being a money pit...even with a $200,000 dollar proposed grant from the state.

Councilman Tom Spring plans to take council and the public on a tour of the former school facility, 7pm August 16th.

Mayor McIlroy also said he is meeting with the new Director of Ohio Christian University,  John Kulaga.

He also mentioned OCU's new "Innovation Center" is almost done, with a grand opening planned for August 31st.

And the long-anticipated 2018 rate increase for membership in the Pickaway County Health District is nearing.  Council will hear about it in their next session.

The increased cost has caused friction with Circleville, which feels it is forced to pay more, with less representation.  The city has offered to help with supporting a tax levy to contribute funding.
