The Pickaway County General Health District has now identified ten pools of mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile Virus. That's nine new discoveries since mid July when the district reported a single West Nile-positive pool near the Deer Creek State Park boat ramp. The infected pools were found mostly in the county with one positive pool found in the Circleville City Limits on Lincoln Avenue. The other pools were located near the Lockbourne Lodge Manufactured Home Community and on Lockbourne Eastern Road located in Harrison & Madison Townships
The district is now conducting additional mosquito control and trapping in the areas of increased activity. Larvicide is being applied near the positive test sites focusing on pools of stagnant water. In the meantime, county residents are encouraged to report pools of standing or stagnant water, tall grass or weed nuisances, scrap tires, solid waste, or other issues that could attract mosquitoes.
They're also giving tips to help protect yourself and your children from mosquitoes when outdoors. They include wearing long sleeves and pants, using mosquito repellants with DEET, avoiding use of colognes or perfumes. The say extra precaution should be taken when outdoors during the hours around dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
The health distinct also provides mosquito larvicide, free of charge, to residents that can be used around their homes. It can be picked up by stopping by the Pickaway County General Health District, located in Suite C at 110 Island Road in Circleville.
