Cincinnati Man Indicted for July Kayak Theft from Dunham's

The Ross County Grand Jury was presented with 19 cases during its Friday session. A total of 18 indictments were returned with only 6 open.

Leonard T. Roy, 37, of Cincinnati, faces 1 fifth degree felony count each Theft and Vandalism, in addition to two first degree misdemeanor charges of Theft and Failure to Comply. The indictments stem from incidents that took place on Monday, July 17th and Tuesday, July 18th. Roy is accused of striking a Chillicothe Police cruiser on Tuesday, July 18th during an attempt to drive away from Dunham Sports in Chillicothe's Shawnee Square with two stolen kayaks. Roy allegedly put his truck into reverse and hit a responding officer's vehicle, causing a kayak to fall out of the truck. Authorities say Roy tried to flee but his truck got stuck in dirt behind the building. Roy is also accused of stealing over $1,100 worth of goods from Wal-Mart on Monday, July 17th. He faces a fine of $2,500 and up to 12 months each for the felony charges and a $1,000 fine and up to 6 months each for the misdemeanors.

Adrick A. Calhoun, 24, of Chillicothe, faces 1 fourth degree felony count each Carrying Concealed Weapons and Receiving Stolen Property. Calhoun was arrested Friday, August 4th during a traffic stop after he was found in possession of a 380 Caliber handgun, reported stolen from a vehicle on July 28th. He faces a fine of $5,000 and up to 18 months on each count.

Joshua Caplinger, 19, of Chillicothe, was indicted on a single second degree felony count of Burglary. Caplinger was apprehended Wednesday, May 31st after he and three unidentified juveniles were found inside a home at 203 Scioto Avenue. The homeowner had left the home shortly before the burglary and returned shortly after to find a door of the home ajar and the four accused burglars inside. Caplinger faces a $15,000 fine and up to 8 years if convicted.

The following three indictments stem from a Burglary on Saturday, July 29th.

James J. Doyle, 39, of Chillicothe, is charged with a single third degree felony count of Burglary. If convicted, he faces a $10,000 fine and up to 5 years incarceration.

Ruth M. Curtis, 38, of Chillicothe, is charged with a single third degree felony charge of Complicity to Burglary. If convicted, she faces a $10,000 fine and up to 5 years incarceration.

Aaron T. Smith, 45, of Chillicothe, is charged with a single third degree felony charge of Complicity to Burglary. If convicted, he faces a $10,000 fine and up to 5 years incarceration.

Doyle, Curtis and Smith were each arrested after a deputy from the Ross County Sheriff's Office was called to a home on Charleston Pike in reference to a suspicious person outside of their neighbor's home. The caller stated that the three suspects entered the home through a back door. Mr. Doyle was subsequently witnessed carrying a television set outside of the home shortly after. The three individuals were then reported to have fled the scene in a black Saturn which was quickly stopped by a sheriff's deputy on Charleston Pike. Smith and Curtis were detained at the scene of the stop. Doyle was able to flee on foot but was later apprehended. Inside the vehicle, the deputy found two television sets, one in the back seat, the other in the trunk, as well as two tablets and a Chromebook that had been taken from the home.
