An officer-involved shooting in Pike County has left one person dead.
Speaking at a press conference on the incident late Thursday morning, Pike County Sheriff, Charlie Reader, said a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop in the 13,000 block of State Route 124 shortly before 4am, Thursday. The vehicle pulled into a drive at 13324, SR 124 at which time three subjects exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The deputy gave chase on foot, making contact with one of the subjects; a scuffle ensued and a shot was fired by the deputy.
Dead is 35-year-old James M. Burks, who was wanted on two outstanding warrants. They were for charges of domestic violence from June 2017 and another for driving under suspension for a drunk driving conviction.
Sheriff Reader says the deputy involved was treated at a local hospital and has since been released. He is now on paid-administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.
Reader said due to the circumstances of the incident, members of the Sheriff's Special Response Team entered the home at 13324, SR 124 where two males and three females were removed from the home to be later interviewed by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
