Social Media Threat Against Pike, Scioto Schools Leads to Arrest

School Districts in Pike and Scioto Counties were placed on alert Thursday following an online threat.

Authorities in both counties began receiving information yesterday evening that a snap chat post threatening violence at the schools was circulating on social media. The post had claimed someone was coming to shoot up the schools.

An investigation tracked the social media account responsible for the post to a home on U.S. 23 in Portsmouth where two juveniles, a 16 year old boy and a 15 year old girl, were located.

The message was found on the girl’s cell phone. She was arrested and charged with 5 counts of inducing panic, one count for each of the districts threatened. Those include the New Boston, Portsmouth, Portsmouth Clay, Portsmouth West, and Waverly School Districts.

The 16 year old boy was found to have run away from a foster home and faces subsequent charges. Authorities say he was not involved in the social media threats.
