Newborn Delivered in Bathroom of Area Fast Food Restaurant

A new born baby, birthed in the restroom of a Chillicothe restaurant, is expected to be alright, but the child's mother is now facing charges.

According to Chillicothe Police, Elizabeth D. Sanders, 26, of Waverly, had gone into the bathroom at the Western Avenue Burger King and delivered the child around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Police had initially been called to the restaurant on a report of a male subject passed out in vehicle on the property.

On arrival at the scene, officers found Zachary T. Frey, 26,  passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle. A search of his person revealed a small amount of what is believed to have been heroin. Frey was subsequently charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Additional charges against Frey are pending lab results on the suspected drugs.

The investigation then led the officers inside the restaurant where Sanders was found sitting on a toilet in the bathroom, with a small amount of suspected heroin located at her feet next to her. She informed a responding medic she believed she had miscarried, but the child was found to be alive and breathing inside the toilet. Both Sanders and the newborn were taken to Adena Regional Medical Center for evaluation. Sanders was arrested on an unrelated warrant for theft upon her release from the hospital.
