Pickaway County Canal Remnants Nominated

Canal remnants in Pickaway County are on their way to historical recognition.

Circleville councilman Tom Spring announced that a National Register nomination has been forwarded to Washington, D.C., for parts of the Ohio & Erie Canal that have survived more than a hundred years of neglect.

In Pickaway County, that includes the lock between Millport and Circleville, and remnants of the former aqueduct across the Scioto River at Circleville.  Three miles of watered canal are along Canal Road in Wayne Township.

This "discontiguous district" also includes features in southern Franklin County, and near Portsmouth...but nothing in Ross County, though those could be added.

Spring says this is also economic development through heritage tourism.  He said that the mayor of Lockbourne in Franklin County related that she had two tour buses to view the locks and canal park in their village, and that there it will be an opportunity to partner with Pickaway County.
