Huntington Girls/Piketon Boys Gain Saturday SVC Wins


All SVC Day at Piketon saw the host team split varsity decisions with Huntington Saturday.


The Lady Huntsmen won a see-saw affair over the Lady Redstreaks 59-53, while Piketon won a similar matchup over Huntington in the boys game, 44-35.



HUNTINGTON LADY HUNTSMEN 59, PIKETON 53

Huntington grabbed an early 14-3 lead over Piketon and held a 14-6 advantage after one period by out-shooting Piketon 50% to 15% in the first quarter. Then trailing 16-6, the Lady Redstreaks launched a 14-0 run to take a 20-16 lead, before seeing a 22-22 tie at halftime. 


Piketon started the third quarter on an 8-0 run, before Huntington answered with a 14-0 run of their own, to take a lead they never relinquished. Piketon did get to within 51-50, but saw Huntington salt the game away at the foul line.


Braiden Collins led the Lady Huntsmen with 26 points, while freshman Allison Basye answered with 15 points and Megan Steele with 8. Katie Hirsch and Riley Black rounded-out the scoring with 6 and 5 points respectively.


Piketon's Grace Lightle scored 20, while Brianna O'Dell, Ally Ritchie and Ally Crothers each scored 9. Elizabetrh Gragg had 6 points.


Huntington shot 21/47 from the field for 45%- but went only 1/7 from the arc. They did well at the foul line, shooting 16/22. Piketon went 21/50 from the field for 42%- including 7/17 from the arc and added 4/8 from the charity stripe.


Piketon won the rebounding battle 28-21, but committed 22 turnovers to only 13 for Huntington.


The win improved Huntington's record to (8-2/12-5), keeping them within two games of SVC leader Unioto, who smothered Westfall 78-43. Jocie Fisher scored her 1,000th career point in the contest.


Piketon drops to (5-6/11-8).

PIKETON 44, HUNTINGTON 35

Much like the girls game that preceeded it, the boys game saw both teams hold several point leads, but the Redstreaks settled in for the win.


Piketon grabbed an early 9-3 advantage, before Huntington came to life  for leads of 10-9 and 23-19 after the first two stops. The Streaks took a 34-32 lead after three quarters and built that margin to 42-32 and held the lead for the win.


Alex Blanton led Piketon with 13 points, Logan Nichols added 8, Scottie Lightle 7 and Blake Reader and Tyree Harris each added 6.  Huntington's Elijah McCloskey was held to only 11 points, while Seth Beeler also scored 11.


Piketon shot 19/47 for 40%- including 2/6 from the arc and added 4/11 from the line. Huntington was checked on 10/24 shooting for 42%- including 5/11 from the arc and 6/15 at the line.


Huntington was hurt badly by the 23 turnovers Piketon forced, while the Redstreaks only committed 11.


Piketon improved to (6-5/9-8) as Huntington drops to (2-9/4-12).
