Authorities in Chillicothe are investigating a fire on the west side of Chillicothe.

According to Chillicothe Police, multiple fire, police and EMS units were called to home in the 600-block of Pine Street on Thursday morning after a resident, identified by police as 58-year-old Daniel Chaney, used furniture to block the entrances to the home, barricading himself inside.

For reasons yet unknown, Chaney is then alleged to have set fire to the home.

It was initially reported that Chaney had perished in the fire, but police say after being unable to enter the residence at first due to the heat and smoke, they were finally able to make their way inside. That's when Chaney was found in serious condition.

Chaney was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center for treatment, but was quickly transferred to OSU Hospital in Columbus.

A total of four officers suffered smoke inhalation while working to extricate Chaney from the burning home. One of the officers was taken to Adena and has since been released. The three other officers were treated at the scene.
