Adena HS Students Suggest State Changes for Lunch Options

A student club at Adena High School is working to improve the food options available during school lunch periods.

-

Adena freshmen, Sierra Saxon and Shianna Roll are members to the club "Family, Career and Community Leaders of America", or FCCLA for short. As part of a club advocacy project, members focused on nutrition and seeking to bring in more healthy lunch options for students.

-

Sierra Saxon says the project included the development of a petition, and letters to state lawmakers asking them to review current legislation, which requires schools to maintain certain USDA standards, and often limits the variety of foods offered by school lunch programs. Sierra says they've also requested grants to improve the school's kitchen equipment.

-

With help from the FCLAA advisor, Christina Hampton, the group has started a petition, which club member Shianna Roll says, is close to meeting its goal.

-

The club recently presented its project to a panel of judges at the state FCCLA competition. If selected as a winner, they'll then take the project onto the national competition.
