Westfall Rallies Past Rock Hill/PV Falls to Burg

One of two SVC Baseball teams that played Friday in the Division 3 District Semis, is headed to Saturday's championship game.

SVC regular season champion Westfall needed to rally late to edge Rock Hill 6-5 in 8 innings, while the Paint Valley Bearcats suffered an 11-1 loss to state power Wheelersburg.

WESTFALL 6, ROCK HILL 5 (8 INNINGS)

Rock Hill got out of the gate quickly with single runs in the first and third innings to go up 2-0 over the Mustangs. Westfall, who has a team batting average of .326, were held without a hit by the Redmen's Logan Hankins through the first two innings.

.

The Mustangs got their offense going with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score 2-2. But, Rock Hill put a three run inning together in the top of the 7th on only one hit- but helped by two Westfall errors.

.

That 5-2 lead going into Westfall's last three outs appeared to be a tall task, until Rock Hill cost themselves by committing two errors in the inning to help the Mustangs claw back into a 5-5 tie and send the game to extra innings.

.

After holding Rock Hill scoreless in the top of the 8th, Westfall strung together back-to-back one-out singles and a walk to load the bases. With Rock Hill's infield playing in to cut the potential winning run off at the plate, Jay Wyman's ground ball to second saw the throw home go wide, allowing Jayden Hammond to score the winning run for a 6-5 victory.

Brayton Felger went 2/3 with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 5-5. Jayden Hammond also had two hits, as Westfall scattered seven hits through the game.

Eric Corzatt was credited with the pitching win, coming on in relief of Lucas Blackburn, who worked the first 7 innings. Logan Hankins pitched well in suffering the loss, but did not get much support as the Redmen committed 6 errors in the game.

.

Westfall had 6 runs/ 7 hits/ 2 errors while Rock Hill had 5 runs/ 7 hits/ 6 errors.

The Mustangs improve to (22-4) and face (20-7 Wheelersburg in the 1:30pm district final Saturday at V.A. Memorial Stadium. 94 Country WKKJ and iHeart Radio airtime will be 1:20pm.

WHEELERSBURG 11, PAINT VALLEY 1 (5 INNINGS)

One bad inning proved to be the downfall for the Paint Valley Bearcats in their 11-1 loss to Wheelersburg, Friday in the D-3 District semi at V.A. Memorial Stadium.

.

The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, only to see Paint Valley answer with a run in the top of the second to even the score at 1-1. But, that's where everything went sour as Wheelersburg scored 7 runs in the bottom of the second for an 8-1 lead, and never looked back.

.

The Pirates added 2 runs in the fourth and a run in the 5th activated the 10-rule rule to end the game.

.

Wheelersburg banged out 13 hits in the game, while Paint Valley was held to only three off winning pitcher Trey Carter. lane Mettler took the loss for PV.

.

Wheelersburg had 11 runs/ 13 hits/ 0 errors and Paint Valley had 1 run/ 3 hits/ 2 errors.

Paint Valley closes their season at (18-11).
