Westfall Clips Wheelersburg/Adena Falls to Minford in District Finals

Westfall's Mustangs won their first district baseball title since 2010, with a 2-1 win over traditional SVC nemesis Wheelersburg, at V.A. Memorial Stadium. Earlier in the day, Minford beat Adena 10-0 in 5 innings.

WESTFALL 2, WHEELERSBURG 1

Mustangs' pitcher Eric Corzatt kept the Pirates' hitters off balance most of the game and combined with a great defensive effort from his teammates in their 2-1 win, Saturday.

.

Corzatt threw 87 pitches, fanning only one and hitting three Pirates batters, but scattered five hits over 5 innings to get the win. He also helped himself at the plate, going 2/3 and had the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 6th inning. Jayden Hammond also has two hits, including an RBI double that accounted for Westfall's run in the second inning.

.

A major turning point in the game was in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Pirates loaded the bases with one out. Athan Temporneras hit a low line-drive which Westfall second baseman Jay Wyman caught just a foot off the ground, then flipped the ball to shortstop Brayton Felger to double-up a Wheelersburg runner and end the last threat the Pirates had in the game.

.

Wheelersburg's lone run came in the fifth, which tied the game at 1-1. The Mustangs regained the lead with Corzatt's RBI single to score pinch-runner Zach Gibson, who had earlier worked his way to third base by stealing second base, then went to third on an error when the Burg catcher's attempt to throw him out- went into the outfield.

.

Westfall 2 runs/ 8 hits/ 1 error and Wheelersburg 1 run/ 5 hits/ 2 errors. Jalen Miller pitched well for the Pirates, but suffered the loss with Corzatt gaining the win.

.

(23-4) Westfall faces (28-1) Minford in the Division 3 Regional Semi at 2pm Thursday, May 30th at V.A. Memorial Stadium.

MINFORD 10, ADENA 0 (5 INNINGS)

Minford's five run first inning spelled bad news of more to come in their 10-0 over the Adena Warriors Saturday in the upper bracket D-3 District Baseball Final at VA Memorial Stadium.

.

The (19-11) Warriors were held to only two hits by Falcons winning pitcher Elijah Vogelsong, who kept Adena batters off balance throughout the game. Adena base hits came from Garrett Wilburn and Zach Fout, as only one Warriors' runner got as far as second base for the day.

.

Ethan Kunkel worked only the first inning for Adena in suffering the loss, with Roman Long working the rest of the game on the mound.

.

After Minford's 5 run first, they added one run in the second, third and fourth innings and two runs in the fifth to activate the "10-run rule" and end the game.

.

Minford 10 runs/ 10 hits/ 0 errors and Adena had no runs/ 2 hits/ 2 errors.
