NWS Confirms Two Tornado Touchdowns in Pickaway County

A violent night of severe weather early Tuesday in the Buckeye State.

-

High winds overnight associated with two now confirmed tornadoes swept through the Love's truck stop near Circleville. One of those twisters touched down on Circleville's south side with a second making ground contact in southeast Pickaway County.

-

Witnesses at Love's say they saw two semis and a camper just pushed right over in the storm. There was a person inside one of those semi trucks and firefighters had to pull that man from the wreckage. Kalob Jahn is a truck driver. He witnessed the trucks getting tossed.

-

"Once everything blew away, we came over and made sure everything was alright," said Jahn. "There was actually a guy sleeping in the trailer, the fire department had to cut him out. He was okay though."

-

Northwestern Ohio was also hit hard last night. An 81-year-old man was killed in Celina in Mercer County after high winds sent a vehicle through the man's home. Several other homes were destroyed on the northwest side of Celina with numerous injuries caused by a now confirmed EF3 tornado. An EF3 twister has also been confirmed for the northern suburbs of Dayton, including Trotwood and Northridge, which is just about four miles from downtown Dayton.

A preliminary storm report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that 52 tornadoes may have touched down yesterday across eight states. 14 suspected tornadoes touched down in Indiana, 10 in Colorado and nine in Ohio. Six suspected tornadoes were reported in Iowa, five in Nebraska, four in Illinois, three in Minnesota, while one suspected tornado was reported out west in Idaho.

Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman says recovery will be slow.

-

"This is going to be tough," said Senator Portman. It's going to take a while to recover, but the federal government is going to play a role."

-

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has declared a state of emergency in three Ohio counties that suffered serious damage from last night's storms. The declaration is for Greene, Mercer and Montgomery counties.

-

The proclamations will allow state agencies to provide resources and support to these counties beyond its normal authority. It also allows the Department of Administrative Services to suspend state purchasing requirements to support recovery efforts and obtain needed resources such as water and generators more quickly and efficiently.
