Memorial for British Capt. Killed While Training WWI Troops at Camp Sherman

Memorial Day ceremonies in Chillicothe included a visit from a former Camp Sherman Army unit

The final event of this year’s “Camp Sherman Days” takes place this Friday, August 9th in Chillicothe’s Grandview Cemetery.

A British officer who lost his life as the result of a military vehicle accident will be commemorated. British Captain, Charles H. Becker, died on August 9th of 1918 while training soldiers stationed at the World War I U.S. Army Encampment.

Former British Army nurse, Beryl Johnson, now a resident of Chillicothe, and in her 90s, will lay a memorial wreath on Captain Becker’s grave to make the 101st anniversary of his death.

The ceremony will be accompanied by a tribute from the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. Honor Guard members will fire off three volleys along with bugle calls and commands used by the British Army.

The ceremony begins Friday at 10:00 a.m. next to the Renick Wall, located in Section 10 of Grandview Cemetery.
